Dear Gary,
About a year ago, a woman brought her 11 year old son (I'll call him Eric to protect his identity) for therapy with a presenting complaint of OCD-like behavior -- mainly, intrusive thoughts. This boy has a twin brother who previously experienced similar behavior which lasted approximately three years with little relief while on medication.
Eric was hearing frightening voices every 30 minutes telling him "you're gay" and "you want to shoot your dad". He would tell his mother when he heard the voices and after many weeks of this, she asked him if he would tell her every couple of hours instead of every half hour.
I worked with him for 40 minutes on:
Even though this voice makes me feel bad.... Even though I'm afraid of the voice.... Even though I'm afraid of becoming gay... Even though I'm afraid I'll hurt my dad... Even though I'm scared..... Even though this same thing happened to my brother and I was afraid it would happen to me too....
I explained to him that sometimes when we're children, and if we're creative enough, we create heroes inside of us that come forward and try to help us by telling us what to do. But, sometimes that voice is having a bad day and it isn't helpful at all. So, the next time you hear that voice tellling you that "you're gay" and "you want to shoot your dad", just say "Thank you for coming, but I don't need you right now and good bye."
When we were done, he said he felt relief from everything. When I followed up several months later with his mother, she said he only had to tap on himself once after our appointment and the voice never came back. She couldn't believe it because her other son suffered for years with his voice.
Several months later, I received a call from this boy's elementary school counselor who said that she had heard about Eric's treatment from his mother who was a school teacher there. She wants to come and experience it so she can give parents another alternative instead of drugs.
