Continuous tapping resolves an intense abreaction

Hi Everyone,

Here is an excellent example by seasoned EFT'er Alison Munro (from the UK) of tapping through someone's ultra intense emotions. I have done this successfully countless times but recommend that it only be done by a properly qualified EFT health professional.

Hi Gary,

Earlier this year I was running an EFT training and got to the part of the afternoon where I work with pain. I always stress that I address physical issues in this class and that I'm hoping to do two things:

1. Focus the participants on a present pain in their body that they can feel now, so they can experience EFT working.

2. Recognize any beliefs they may hold about pain being purely physical rather than having emotional foundations.

It's interesting to me how the perfect person always comes up, even if you don't think so at the time! This was a fairly small group, and there was already great rapport between the participants. A lady said she had 'just this period pain, that I'd like to get rid of' and volunteered to come up and work with me. I agreed and as she walked towards me, I could feel a heavy energy that was coming with her and knew in that moment that this was much bigger than the period pain and this was going to be one of those 'getting in the trenches and just doing it' demo sessions!

I had a quick flash of 'perhaps this is not such a good idea for a demo, but oh well....'  We were just about to start and she said, 'I think I might have the start of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as my Mum and Aunt both have it severely and I can feel the starting twinges in my knees when I go up and down stairs, just thought I'd mention that...'

Another alarm bell rang in the back of my mind almost as confirmation that this heavy energy that I could feel around her, was presenting itself to be worked with!

However, she'd come up for period pain, so that's where we started, as I feel it's important to start with what the client presents and just let the layers peel themselves away to reveal the deeper, heavier issues underneath.

After a few rounds, focusing on the period pain specifically and adding in some emotions about how she felt about it, the pain subsided and gave way to those deeper emotional disruptions - intense anger, rage and fury.  As these disruptions started to come up fast and furious (every pun intended), she started to shake and appeared to go into physical shock, with her face whitening and her lips turning a little blue!

At this point, that thought about maybe this is too big for this class popped back into my mind again, but was swiftly followed by the intuitive thought of 'just hold the space and keep tapping', which I did. Never before have I had to hold up someone's head during tapping, as her body almost crumpled through such a severe disruption and emotional release, whilst her legs and feet were still raging and stamping the ground. Her temperature was off the scale too! There were tears and laughter during the whole process and all I did was hold the space and keep furiously tapping round the points, giving her permission to feel those deep down hurts and wounds and all that anger, rage and fury, not to get in its way but to just let it come up and be felt, for its highest possible release... and it did so.

After about 30 minutes of this releasing, her body became calm, and she was exhausted, but smiling and amazed that her body had held down so much fury and anger and that this tiny tapping thing could bring that safely up and release it. Meanwhile, the whole group had been watching and tapping along, and at some points there was silence in the room, as there was when we'd finished.

One of the interesting aspects of this session was that I said very little and just supported her emotionally, physically and energetically. The tapping did the work for her and it was a valuable teaching tool for the participants who often get bogged down at this stage in their practice of EFT, with what to say, right words etc. If we just allow the process to happen and not get in the way with words, when they're not needed, we don't block the flow and the release happens.

As we develop with our practice of EFT, this is something that we do naturally and it's about being present in the moment with the client. I asked the group if they had any questions, for me or our volunteer and at first, they were stunned into silence, and then someone just asked her how she felt now, and she said, 'Great, exhausted, but great!'

I then asked her how her period pain felt and we all just laughed! She had totally forgotten about that! So although it's always important to work with what the person presents, it's also useful to be aware of your own thoughts and feelings and to allow your intuition to guide you and the process when working with someone.

In this moment, that's all I did, and whilst it was a little unnerving when her colour drained and her lips went blue I knew intuitively that this was what was needed and that if I just stepped aside and held the space, these disruptions would have the space to free themselves. In that process she experienced an emotional freedom that she had not bargained for and that is one of the best things about doing this work.

I emailed her a few days after the event to make sure she was ok; after all it had been a dramatic demo by anyone's standards. She replied to me that she was fine and while the whole experience was a little overwhelming for her, she'd slept well ever since. She also mentioned that she had been running up and down the stairs at work, instead of taking the lift (elevator) and had felt no pain in her knees, which was the reference she'd made to her possible RA in her knees, as she came up for the demo.

So it seems that we went some way in interrupting the progression of her RA. While there's probably more specific healing work to be done by tapping through past events of anger, rage and fury, three of the typical emotions often stuck in the body that may express themselves through RA, it's certainly a great start and a demo that we'll always remember and feel privileged to have been a part of.

Hugs,

Alison Munro
