As a young boy I had a dream, namely, to play center field for the New York Yankees baseball team. It was an obsession and occupied much of my thinking. I frequently imagined hitting towering home runs and jumping over 100 feet (30 meters) in the air to catch fly balls.
I even felt sorry for Mickey Mantle, the existing Yankee center fielder, because I was going to take his job.
But, alas, that dream never came true. When Mickey Mantle finally left the game, someone else replaced him... not me. I wasn't even in the conversation. Gary who?
As it turns out many other young boys had that same dream. But only one person at a time can live that majestic fantasy. Same with being President of the United States or the heavy weight boxing champion of the world.
So dreams don't necessarily come true. In fact, most of them fail. The dreamer never becomes the actor, or the singer, or the athlete, or the author in just the way that they so fervently desired.
Bummer.
Dreams do, however, take you in directions. In my case, baseball led me to football where I excelled well enough in high school to earn a scholarship to Stanford. That opened a whole new world to me. In other examples...
A dream to be an inventor may take you in the fulfilling direction of being a science teacher.
A dream to be a famous singer may take you in the fulling direction of being a choir director.
A dream to be a great athlete may take you in the fulfilling direction of being a coach or a sports broadcaster.
And so it goes.
Dreams may not necessarily come true,
But they DO take you in directions.
So keep dreaming. Dream BIG and let those dreams take you in directions.
e-hugs, Gary
