EFT reduces pain and swelling, and speeds healing of a fractured ankle

Hi Everyone,

Lisa Toplis from the UK injured her ankle and used EFT to manage the pain so she could get through an important family event before going to the hospital. As it turned out the ankle was fractured in two places and, after examination, the nurse at the hospital said, "You have truly astounded me, I thought this would only be a sprain because your level of pain and swelling was not high enough for a standard fracture, but your ankle is fractured in two places.” There are many useful concepts built within this story. Please consult physicians on all medical issues.

Hugs, Gary

I’m an EFT practitioner who had the very good fortune to be trained by two EFT Masters – Sue Beer and Emma Roberts.  I have used EFT in my own practice and extensively on myself, trying as you suggest to, “get myself out of the way” when dealing with clients.  I have had astounding success on all emotional issues, (although I am still a work in progress!) but recently I came to realise personally just how powerful EFT is on a physical level also.

I read a newsletter article some time ago about EFT being used on a lady who had severe leg pain, and although the practitioner could reduce the pain in one leg, the pain would not go away completely in the other, which is how the practitioner knew something was wrong.  This was proved correct when x-rays showed the lady’s leg was fractured.

I used the knowledge from this newsletter feature to ascertain that my ankle was probably fractured because the pain was not completely eradicated using EFT.

I was a long way from home attending a family event in Scotland.  We left home on Saturday and had a good flight to Edinburgh, got picked up at the airport, and dropped at our hotel.  Due to our flight being delayed, we only had time to book in and deposit our luggage before heading straight out again to meet up for dinner with the rest of the family.

My husband hailed a taxi, and as I stepped off the curb towards the taxi, my left foot slipped and rather than going forwards, I ended up heading straight downward, with my foot at a very awkward angle beneath me.  I was in a great deal of pain, and could not move for several minutes. My husband asked if I wanted to go straight to the hospital, but I declined as I thought I had just badly sprained my ankle, and knew EFT would be far more effective than sitting in Accident and Emergency.

The taxi ride was for only 5 minutes before we had to meet up with other members of the family and then walk for 15 minutes to the restaurant.  Because I had limited time in the taxi, I made my set up statement as long as possible as I needed to do fewer rounds.

I started with the statement: Even though we have just arrived and it is supposed to be a fabulous weekend, (it was a family Christening and my husband was giving a reading) and I have ruined things by being so clumsy and my ankle is going to swell up like a football and I won’t be able to walk, and I will be in (intensity level) 10 out of 10 agony, I completely and deeply accept myself.

My reminder phrases alternated as follows and for speed and efficiency, I tapped on the collarbone point only (all of my tapping was done silently as I was with people all the time):

Clumsy idiot,

Ankle is going to swell up like a football

I will be in 10 out of 10 agony,

You are going to ruin it for everyone

My husband will be too worried to do his speech

I won’t be able to enjoy myself because of the pain

I continued with the reminder phrases and did not adjust the set up phrase, and to my surprise I immediately felt a drop in pain as I stepped down out of the taxi on to the pavement.  We proceeded up a short flight of stairs into the house, and my pain level had subsided so dramatically, I could only get pain from completely rotating my ankle.

As I was in conversation with other family members it was difficult to tap at this point, but as we proceeded on foot to the restaurant, my pain level returned at an intensity level of 2 out of 10.  Whilst walking I tapped using my collarbone point, and the karate chop to do the set up statement.  My main concern, because I had fallen so badly, was the swelling and the pain.  So I concentrated upon these as we walked (my pain remained stable at an intensity level of 2 out of 10).

The setup was:

Even though my ankle is going to swell up like a balloon or a football and it’s going to be black and blue, and I won’t be able to walk without being in agony...

Reminder phrases on the collar bone point were:

Swell up like a balloon or a football,

Black and blue,

Won’t be able to walk,

Will be in complete agony.

I got to the restaurant feeling quite comfortable but every now and then I got a twinge of pain when I rotated my ankle (I kept tapping throughout the meal using my fingertip points under the table cloth).

We got back to the hotel quite late and I stayed awake for an hour after my husband had fallen asleep, because after walking back to the hotel, I was in pain at an intensity level of 8 out of 10.  At this point I realised there was probably something other than a sprain, because I could reduce my pain level to a 2 out of 10 very easily and despite adjustments of the set up phrase which incorporated all of my negative emotions about the fall: being a dozy idiot, not watching what I was doing, being excessively clumsy and every other negatives that came to me, I still could not get the pain intensity level lower than a 2 out of 10.

I awoke at 5.30 am in a lot of pain again and started tapping.  This time I used the set up statement:

Even though there might be a good reason for me to keep this pain, because I am worried I have seriously damaged my ankle, I know that it is safe for me to let go of this pain if there is nothing wrong, and I completely and deeply accept myself.

I continued to tap for another two hours, and did manage to reduce the pain so that I could walk down to breakfast with a pain level of 3 out of 10.  Over breakfast I continued to tap on the pain, using the karate chop point and fingertips, and was able to stand without more than a 2 out of 10 level of discomfort.  I made it through the Christening, tapping when possible and we got home late in the evening.

The following morning the pain was back up to an 8 out of 10 and although the swelling was not obvious, I rang my Doctor’s office who advised me to go to accident and emergency for x-rays in case of a fracture.  I tapped again on the pain before I left and once again got it down to an intensity level of 2 out of 10.

I was able to catch the bus to the hospital without too much difficulty and could put all of my weight onto the foot.  When the A & E Nurse saw me, she thought it was just a sprain, but recommended x-rays s to be sure.  My pain level was still stable at a 2 out of 10.

When I saw her again after the x-rays her words were, “You have truly astounded me, I thought this would only be a sprain because your level of pain and swelling was not high enough for a standard fracture, but your ankle is fractured in two places.”  Although neither fracture was particularly severe, I should definitely have been in a lot more pain than I was.  Thanks to the EFT not reducing the pain below an intensity level of 2, I knew that there was a problem and the EFT also kept me comfortable enough to make it through the weekend.

I had a plaster cast for a week, transferred to occasional crutch use for a week, and was walking around normally the following week.  I understood from the medical professionals I spoke to that I should have been in plaster for approximately 5 to 6 weeks, but thanks to my pain level and mobility this was unnecessary.  Today, 7 weeks after the event my ankle is completely back to normal.  I do not need physiotherapy or any other medical follow up.

With grateful thanks!

Lisa Toplis, EFT and Reiki Practicioner
