EFT saved her job -- a case of elevator terror

Hi Everyone,

This phobia case by Annie O'Grady from Australia was especially challenging because the elevator fear involved was not just an irrational fear. Rather, it was backed up by three very bad elevator experiences. Read how Annie handled it.

A client made me aware of the plight of business people who suffer with a height phobia or an elevator phobia. They can only apply for jobs where they work at street level, or one or two floors above. In high rise cities this is severely limiting.

So when a new client, Audrey (not her real name), contacted me at a friend's suggestion to try EFT for her terror in elevators (Australians call them 'lifts'), I expected a phobia. But a phobia is an apparently irrational fear. It turned out that Audrey had good reason to be too terrified to set foot in a lift. She had been traumatized by being in three lift accidents.

She had had no fear until a lift she was in dropped three floors. That made her nervous in lifts. Later she was trapped, panicking, in a hospital lift for ten minutes, where passengers included 'a patient with a gaping wound'. In a third incident, she was in a Hong Kong lift that dropped twenty-six floors.

Currently Audrey was working at a job she liked on the second floor of an Adelaide city office building, and had managed to keep her fears a secret. But she had just been told she would be moved to the seventh floor. She was afraid she'd have to try and find another job.

In her first session we used the Movie Technique on one of the lift incidents. Before she began to tell the movie story (Horror in the Lift), we collapsed her anxiety about telling it from 10-0, and she said she felt relaxed and 'woozy'. Then we collapsed intensities through panic after the doors closed, feeling helpless at the mercy of the lift, through huge shock and terror.

Even though I feel trapped and stranded and I hope they can get me out... Even though I'm afraid I'm going to die in here...

Returning for her second session, Audrey said she 'felt a bit more relaxed about this lift problem'. We worked on aspects of her fears:

Even though I hate the whooshing sound a lift makes... Even though I hate the bouncy wavering movement... Even though I'm afraid there'll be something wrong with this lift... Even though I'm afraid I'll get stuck again...

When we applied the Movie Technique to the remaining two incidents, these memories triggered memories of three earlier panic attacks involving feeling threatened, and once of being in a hospital incident where she was drenched with the blood of her hemophiliac brother. Finally, we tapped a release on 'the last residue of this lift trauma'.

A year later Audrey contacted me for an EFT session on another problem. She added, 'By the way, I've been happily going up and down in lifts at work several times a day since our sessions.'

EFT is just the greatest blessing. I love to think of the healing it achieves every week just in my own EFT practice, radiating out - and when you multiply that by all the people using EFT effectively around the world - wow. What a force for good.
