Fear of flying subsides--follow up included

Hi Everyone,

Here's a fear of flying case by Kerry Sim that was not a one-minute-wonder (many of them are). Impressive relief was gained during a hurried five minute session, but remnants of the fear occurred in future flying events. Note how additional tapping during those events substantially aided the problem. There are some practical ideas in this article.

I have been doing EFT for about seven years and I am still amazed by some of the results.  Recently I arrived at an evening meeting before it began, Susan approached me and said she had seen pictures of me flying float planes (a type of seaplane).  She was terrified to fly in one but was taking a trip the next week.  She wanted to talk to me about flying in a float plane so she wouldn’t be so scared.

At this point it was about five minutes before the meeting started, and I didn't have time to fully explain EFT to her.  I told her that I might have something better than just telling her about float planes. I would ask her some questions while I was tapping on certain points.  She was to tap on herself.

I asked her to tell me, on a scale of 0-10, what her level of distress might be, right now in this room, as she thought about going on the flight.  She said it would be 13 on a scale of 0 to 10.  We tapped the points as we talked about the reason she was going on the flight.  Then she asked me to tell her the procedures and details about everything - how to enter the airplane, where she'd sit, what to do, what it sounded like, etc.

I asked her to imagine walking down the dock to the airplane, opening the door, getting in, sitting down, smelling what it smelled like, putting on the seat belt, feeling the vibration as the engine started, feeling the waves lapping on the floats as they taxi out for take-off, hearing and feeling the increased sound and vibration as the pilot moved the throttle forward for take-off,  feeling the acceleration, the sensation of lift at take-off, and the smoothing out of everything as the plane becomes airborne...

I have to confess, I was talking rather quickly, in order to get as much done as possible before the meeting started.  While we talked, we went through several rounds of tapping on the head, body and finger points.  Finally, when the meeting leader made some motions that the meeting was about to start, I asked her how she felt and she said she felt a little better.

I suggested that during the meeting she tap on the EFT points if she found herself thinking about the flight and feeling any distress.  At the break we would check in with her feelings.  I noticed during the meeting that she was tapping her fingers almost constantly.  At the break an hour later I asked how she was feeling and she said she was fine.  To check her level of intensity I said, ‘flying in a float plane,’ and she said, "You know, I can't seem to find anything. I guess a zero."

I tested it by getting her to visualize some of the things we talked about earlier - nothing came up. After the meeting ended I checked in again with Susan and explained the technique in more detail. We did a full round using all the phrases to test her lack of distress.  She was unable to get any kind of rating.  I told her to feel free to call me if anything came up later and she said she would.

About a week later Susan and I were at another event.  The first thing she did was run over and give me a big hug, and say: "Kerry, you have changed my life! "  She told me she had taken the flight in the float plane and it was just great. The view was spectacular, and she loved every minute of it.  Not a bit of concern.

Then she said, "I have decided to fly to Toronto for my brother's 40th birthday.  I had been quite worried about it, and even though I really wanted to go, I probably wouldn't have. Now I will be able to go without worry."  Then, after a short pause for breath, the next thing she said,  truly did please and surprise me.  She grinned and said: "One of the people I met last week is a pilot and I'm going flying with her, maybe even take a flying lesson!"

Recently I received this update from Susan when I asked permission to use her story: "After the floatplane thing ... a miracle in itself, I did not go to my brother's birthday after all.  The reason?  We got a call, from our adoption agency saying that a baby was about to be born in Cincinnati; and could we be there the next day?  Besides my elation, I was freaking out about having to fly there! On a big plane, for 5 hours, then back home again!!!  But hey, what else was I going to do?!  We got on the plane the next day, and I tapped the whole way.

While I was still nervous, it was mostly because I was about to become a mom.  As the flight went along I felt less and less anxiety, and eventually I was completely at ease.  There were a few travel complications and we had to take a tiny prop plane shortly after arriving in Cincinnati, but it was all good. Tap, tap, tap.  I tapped on the flight home with my new baby, and again, no anxiety.  Now I tap when I'm feeling stressed about whatever ... a crying baby, my new business, being stuck in traffic, and it really brings calm to the situation. Thanks so much for your help Kerry, that was the best 5 minute therapy session I've ever had!!!!"
