One brief EFT session releases a fear that originated at birth--Important for serious EFT students

Hi Everyone,

Alan Morison from the UK applied EFT to his sister's "fear of car washes." As it turns out, it wasn't REALLY the car washes that caused her fear. Serious EFT students will want to study this to see how tapping unearthed the real issue out of the blue. Alan says, "After finishing, Moya said with open astonishment, 'It's gone! I can hardly believe this!' Despite years of conventional training and practice in medicine, Moya was utterly convinced of the efficacy of EFT...."

Hi Gary,

Having just read about someone's experience of panic attacks I would like to share with you the short session I had three years ago with my sister-in-law Moya Morison, emeritus professor of health and nursing and eminent author of several books on wound care. I write this with her blessing.

Moya had a perennial fear of car washes and would sit in her car frozen with tense muscles, only relaxing again when the cycle finished and she was able to 'escape'. Knowing that this was the symptom of something which had affected her, maybe in childhood, we tried to find an early memory which might have caused her violent reaction in car washes - but nothing emerged. So we continued to chat just to keep the flow going as silence is the one sure way to stop any consultative progress.

After a minute or so she suddenly said, 'It's when I was being born!' Amazingly she had a memory of being trapped in the birth canal as a yet unborn baby and she recounted the story her mother had told her of the midwife urging her to push. It was a long, difficult birth, her mother being only 5 ft tall with narrow hips and the midwife was very concerned that two lives were in danger - mum only finding the energy for that final effort when she was told of the dangers.

We did the first round of tapping for 'being stuck', starting with the setup phrase:

Even though I feel panicky about being stuck here...

Then we tapped saying a variety of reminder phrases, all of which were applicable

I feel so panicky … I can't get out … I'm stuck … I'm going to die if I don't get out … It's so dark

I feel anxious … I need to get out now! … These panicky feelings

The feelings had subsided remarkably to a level of intensity of 2-3 from an original 10 on a scale of 0 to 10, so we tapped for what was left of the negative emotions using a similar setup phrase but aiming it at the reduced feelings. I also introduced a choice to reinforce the increasing positive feelings:

Even though I still feel some panic about being trapped there I choose to feel at ease with myself and enjoy being a baby...

Remaining fear … I'm feeling better already … Still a little panicky … Come on Mum, hurry up! … Still a bit edgy … I'm feeling more relaxed … Can't you do something! … I feel ok now

After finishing, Moya said with open astonishment, 'It's gone! I can hardly believe this!' Despite years of conventional training and practice in medicine, Moya was utterly convinced of the efficacy of EFT, so much so that she has written the testimonial below.

"As a professional in NHS health care I have often observed the power of positive beliefs, optimism and hope in facilitating positive outcomes for patients. The skillful clinician understands that there is both a science and an art to healing and uses this knowledge in any therapist/patient relationship. Nowadays there is a plethora of self-help books that endeavour to tap into the power of the mind, and no doubt many of the approaches advocated can be successful. However, they do not in themselves circumvent the benefit of one-to-one therapy in which a trained practitioner helps the patient to learn and develop techniques of self-help. When I first came across EFT, the scientist in me was a little skeptical. How could such a technique be effective in so many areas of life? However, my own experience of it has made me want to know more. Although by nature happy and optimistic, I had one obvious phobia: sit-in car washes. My heart rate would shoot up, I would feel a rising sense of panic and only by a conscious effort of will could I relax my tense muscles and endeavour to sit quietly (although full of inner turmoil), until the programme was over. It took just 2 minutes of EFT with my brother-in-law Alan Morison to enable me to understand the origins of this fear and to overcome it. I was awed at the relief I obtained - and so quickly too! My fear of being in a car wash has quite simply disappeared. My mind races at the endless ways EFT can be applied! This may seem a trivial example, but most of us, I suspect, have both conscious and unconscious fears (born of past negative experiences) that hamper us emotionally and physically in our daily lives. I believe that EFT can help people to understand and deal with these fears. Furthermore, the biological mechanisms that mediate the mind-body relationship are being increasingly understood - see for instance Bruce Lipton’s wonderful book: The Biology of Belief - so there is a science to it, too! Thanks to EFT more and more people are coming to experience the joys of the higher levels of wellness that we all deserve." Moya Morison Emeritus Professor of Health and Nursing

With deepest thanks again, Gary.
