Using EFT when the client has a memory "blank spot"

It is not unusual for traumatized clients to "protect themselves" by developing "blank spots" in their memories. This has the effect of hiding the issue from EFT which, of course, can impair the process. Alan Morison shares with us his case (and his solution) with a client who "didn't want to go back..." to a previous time. This is a useful example for a common problem.

I thought you would like to hear of my experience with a lady who had suffered abuse as a 7 year old.

When I asked her to play the movie (using The Movie Technique) she could not access anything of that particular period, having blanked it all out. Accessing happier times later on was no problem, but this traumatic time just wouldn't show up.

I tapped her for blanking out this period of her life and although she made some progress I knew we had not addressed the core issue. As we talked about her situation she said that she could only see herself as a 21 year old looking back at the 7 year old. As we continued to talk the intuition came to me that I had to get her to go back even though she didn't want to.

The setup phrase was "Even though I don't want to go back...." and it had the desired effect, as she was able to release all the emotions she had blanked out over the years. However I felt that her emotional side was still not yet completely together and she agreed, estimating her 0-10 intensity as a 7.

The next setup statement was, "Even though I don't feel complete....." and the intensity was reduced immediately to a 2. I tapped her next for the remaining lack of completeness which finally brought her together again. It was easy to tell as a I got the biggest smile from her!

I know that many people blank out severe emotional times, so I hope that this experience can be of help to others in a similar situation.
