Monica Broadfoot Johnson applies group EFT for trauma in a school setting. Note how she does this successfully with both adults and children. Recently, one of our schools within my district had a crisis. It was quite complicated because the child who died has a mother and an aunt who teach in the same school. Also, the staff was very tightly knit. We always begin the day with gathering the staff into the library to give the facts, see who needs extra help and to organize what classes we need to go into first.
When I walked in, everyone was already there and the sensation was one of extreme shock, sadness and being overwhelmed. Our lead person went through the regular routine. After she finished, I said that I would like to have everyone do something that might help to calm them somewhat. I did not explain anything about what we would be doing. I just asked them to follow what I do and to repeat what I say; no more than that. So they did.
About half way through, the whole energy in the room changed. When we had finished there was this unusual hush in the room. They all just stood quietly for about a minute before they began to talk with each other. I asked if anyone could feel a difference in them and over half of the heads nodded 'yes'.
Then my partner and I went into the victim's brother's grade level; 2nd grade. We did our regular session. I decided that we needed to have these children tap because this crisis had brought up many other crises that these children had lived through.
I told them that I wanted them to think about something that was bothering them. We did an intensity rating by hand measurement. Most of them had their hands spread a great distance apart. I told them that I would call it 'this big problem', but they should just think about what was bothering them. So we began....
Even though I have this big problem, I'm still a great kid.
As soon as the 'I'm still a great kid' was said I saw some shifting. We did some variations:
Even though I HATE this problem, I'm still a great kid. Even though I can't control this problem, I forgive myself for just being a kid.
We ended with choosing to have a good day even when there is so much sadness around us today.
In the end most of the children's intensity rating went down to having the hands be just a few inches apart. Then we told them that, if they were still bothered, they could come to the library to work personally with someone.
When we walked out of the first room, my partner, who knows EFT but doesn't use it much at her school, said that she really liked how we ended our session in the room.
