  • Testing our work and personal radiation

Hi Everyone, Below is a thoughtful, well written letter from one of our members. The first part comments on our recent discussions about testing our work and the sort of language that might be appropriate. Good points are made and worth our attention. No comments are necessary on it. The second part, however, touches on how licensed professionals must interface with their clients and contrasts their restrictions versus mine. I consider this a ripe subject and respond at the end with the idea of Personal Radiation. FIRST PART OF THE LETTER: "Dear Gary. In a recent phone conversation we had, you told me a story about how Roger Callahan was working with a young boy and had him think about his problem in very descriptive words of the vernacular rather than a more "proper expression." I have begun to do just that both in my own personal work and with clients. I was surprised to find that even in the privacy of my own head, I tend to label my feelings in a way that lacks the energy of the real thought or feeling. I tend to think that "I am angry about ....." when what I would really like to say is "That pisses me off!" I have begun to experiment on myself and really like the way it feels as I do EFT on me. Occasionally I find myself tapping and saying "This yucky feeling." It certainly doesn't fit the DSM IV but I do know exactly what I mean. Recently I began to encourage my clients to tell it like it is and have them say their own words as they tap. They like it a lot because it feels right in the context of the work. It also demystifies EFT. It makes it easier for them to practice at home when they don't have to label each feeling the "right" way. Perhaps by encouraging clients to think and feel in their own words it may help reduce the SUDs even faster....." SECOND PART OF THE LETTER: "......On the videos I can see how people trust you. BUT you are explicit in saying that you are not a doctor or psychologist, therefore, I think that people allow things from you that they wouldn't from me because of THEIR expectations, not because of our approach. On one video you tap the woman who was molested as a child. I must admit that I flinched when I saw you do it because we are taught that often people like that are very fragile about their boundaries, especially when a male touches them. But she seemed OK with it. I think that is because of who she saw you as and her trust." GC RESPONSE: While her response to me may have been based somewhat on her sense of trust towards me, I doubt seriously if that was a big player here. I think it was EFT itself that did most of the job. Think about it. EFT did its job even though you couldn't have picked a worse environment for healing. In that scene she was being filmed, people were watching, she was discussing her most intimate issue to a relative stranger (who, to her, was a public speaker and NOT a therapist) AND I was male. It is true that these people ARE often very fragile about their boundaries and they often remain fragile after many conventional therapies. But, with EFT, the problem is often handled so fast and so well that strength quickly replaces fragility. That was certainly the case here. If EFT hadn't done its job, she would have been out of there in an instant. As it was, the problem was resolved in minutes and, months later, as she appears again on the videos, she verifies the problem was STILL resolved. It was nowhere in sight. This is typical (hearty chest pounding while trying to be humble). LETTER (CONT'D): I don't want to go on too long with this. Have others expressed this difference to you? Please try to understand where those of us with licenses come from. We have both written and unspoken rules because of the nature of OUR relationship with clients and what they think is going to happen. Thank you for sharing this happening. I think it is very important." GC RESPONSE: Well said. Licensed therapists have a number of rules and requirements that don't pertain to unlicensed persons such as me. I recognize this. And, indeed, clients carry around a certain set of stereotypical perceptions regarding your conduct. They would be most put off, for example, if you behaved like Hulk Hogan or Madonna. I suggest, however, that yet another item is affecting our clients perceptions of us. Namely, what we radiate about ourselves. People pick up our attitudes about them, our sense of conviction about what we do, our confidence, our level of caring. We earn their trust and their willingness to proceed by our unspoken mannerisms, our posture, our voices. These things radiate from us as reflections of our own competence and sense of mission. My confidence level with EFT is quite high because I have been doing it for years with hundreds of successes. Clients pick that up and thus allow me to "get away with" strong testing techniques, "questionable" language when necessary, humorous comments and other behaviors that I deem useful when helping a particular client. Many of you are raising your own level of Personal Radiation as your EFT successes accumulate. Our clients aren't the only ones who make progress here. Further, I don't think I am able to pull this stuff off simply because I don't carry around the stereotype of a licensed therapist. Rather, I think the "permission" I get from the client to be flexible comes more from what I radiate than from some stereotypical image. After all, if my stereotypical image was really a factor no one would deal with me. Who wants to enter into emotional healing with a nerdy engineer that runs around muttering numbers to himself all day long? Peace, Gary A Client Speaks on Personal Radiation Hi Everyone, The letter below offers a helpful, if not critical, insight. It is from a client who has been in therapy for 15 years. He responds to my recent comments on Personal Radiation and offers us a unique opportunity to see ourselves from the client's point of view. He prefers to remain anonymous. LETTER: "I have been on the other side of the fence now (patient, client, I actually like warrior best) for about 15 years. I have logged enough research time with more different concepts, therapies, therapists, and talking to other warrior's to give the most ardent PhD's nightmares. I consider this concept of Personal Radiation to be the most important factor in most therapeutic outcomes. I actually have another term for the process, I like to call it shine, as in the movie the Shining. When I sit down with a therapist, and after we go through the details of my situation, if this feeling of I've been there before, I've done this a number of times before, I'm very comfortable working with this type of situation, and I want to help you deeply is not reflected back to me, at this point I have no interest in working with that person. I don't even care if they developed the therapy. I'd like to give you my favorite line about healing by Hugh Prather. "The mind that sees itself as whole and another as sick unquestionably requires healing. True healing is thus expressed within the mind of the healer and not within the body of the patient. When a healer sees that he or she is not separate from the patient-and only love holds this vision-healing is already accomplished." • A physicist speaks

Alert : This is one of 3,000 EFT Tapping articles that were written by users like you but before 2010. As such they are outdated and some of the links don't work. Nonetheless, they provide an excellent Peek at the Possibilities and show you the wide reach of even our older methods. See TRAINING for our free and near-free advanced methods. Hi Everyone, One of our new members, Mike Wright, has a degree in physics and wrote me a well articulated letter after reading my response to one of Ken Barclay's recent questions. He starts his letter with that question and response and develops his well thought out ideas from there. The letter is highly technical in nature and, I suspect, will be of more interest to some than others. Peace, Gary LETTER: 3. When I was in school, "energy" was defined as the capacity to do work. When people just talk about "energy," they usually are referring to how they feel. As an engineer concerned with feelings, how do you think of "energy"? Is it some kind of physical property of organisms? What does the term "energy system" mean? GARY'S RESPONSE: In the context of EFT, energy refers to the oriental notion of Qi and doesn't have the same connotation as it does in classical physics. I liken it to subtle amounts of electricity but I don't think anyone has a firm definition for it. In a way, it is like gravity. No one knows exactly the what or why of gravity but we know it is there by its effects. So we study its effects and make great practical use of it. Airplanes and satellites wouldn't exist without our knowledge of gravity's effects. EFT makes great use of these energy meridians and provides observable effects for our scientists of tomorrow. To me, the term "energy system" is a convenient way of labeling the total system of energy pathways (meridians) that course throughout the body. MIKE WRIGHT'S COMMENTS: Gary, Your answer to Ken and your use of the term "energy system" without a rigorous definition prompts me to encourage you not to forsake your training as an engineer too quickly. I've studied the oriental systems for almost thirty years. I have a degree in physics and have diligently kept abreast of current events in that field. There is a temptation to label the oriental perspective as "mysterious" and either accept it or reject it as such without seeking Western correlates. If I asked you, as an engineer, to give an an accurate but non-technical explanation of how a telegraph system, desk-top computer or TV/VCR worked, I'm sure you could do it easily. So, when asked to give a similar explanation of the psycho-biological system, perhaps you haven't seen the correlation: input, process, output. The telegraph, computer or TV/VCR receives a signal from something outside of the system, something in its environment, usually a human tapping the keys. It processes the signal according to its design and generates a response. Those who investigated chi and meridians earlier this century had a bias towards classical physics. They assumed they would find separate little wires to propagate the chi just like they had found separate systems to propagate blood and chemical nerve signals. When they didn't find the wiring, they concluded the whole thing was a myth of the mysterious orient rather than considering that maybe their assumptions were erroneous or that their tools were insufficient. In recent years, much has changed. You've referred to the work of Becker and some of the other work cited by Callahan. Here's more: If you haven't read the work of Fritz Popp and Walter Kroy in Electromagnetic Bioinformation, get it through interlibrary loan. It lays out the engineering of the biological organism so clearly and the research was done in the 70's. All of the other works in Callahan's bib support the idea that the energy system" IS electro-mechanical, electro-optical, electro-acoustic, electromagnetic AND can be directly engineered just like VCRs and computers. This does not reduce a human being to a mere machine. The biological system is a machine, but the operator is outside of the system. Thus there is a simple perspective for mind, spirit, soul, reincarnation, all the mysteries. Stanford cellular biologist Bruce Lipton has done outstanding work on describing the system, the operator and the interface. Thomas Bearden (you'll find his recent work on the internet, search authors in Yahoo!) has also done wonderful work on direct engineering of quantum virtual states and nested hyper-realties. He ties in the relationship of spirit, soul, mind, body and electromagnetics. His books, "AIDS: Biological Warfare" and "Excalibur Briefing" provide excellent syntheses of his work, although they are dated as to the Soviet Union. The work of Bohm and Pribram provides another piece. In summary, our brains mathematically construct "concrete" reality by interpreting frequencies from another dimension, a realm of meaningful primary reality that transcends time and space. Remember this is from a neurosurgeon and a physicist, not an Eastern mystic. A nice summary of their work can be found in "The Holographic Paradigm," edited by Ken Wilber in 1985. Note that thoughts are frequencies. They aren't necessarily generated by the brain, but the brain can act as a receiver of thought, so once again we are not reduced to being mere machines. Spirit, soul, mind can signal the brain. "Some experiences are related to what is unconscious in us - to processes for which there is consciousness but no awareness. In quantum theory, these are situations in which the quantum state does not collapse but goes on developing in time according to the dynamics of the situation. The unconscious dynamics, however, may play a role in later conscious events. This aspect allows us to verify the effects of quantum interference in experiments of unconscious perception." - McCarthy, K. and Goswami, A. "CPU or self-reference? Discerning quantum functionalism and cognitive models of mentation" Jnl of Mind and Behaviour. (I don't have the date of publication, it was in 1993 or 1994.) This could be the technical definition of Callahan's p. Goswami is a physics professor at the University of Oregon. He wrote a book called "The Self-Aware Universe: how consciousness creates the material world" from which I took the above citation. Let me put it all together briefly: The human body is the most advanced and elegant "machine" system around. It is self-repairing, self-replicating and evolutionary. It can adapt to ambiguities and an ever-changing environment. We (spirit, soul, mind, personality) use it to explore and relate to the physical environment. It is a vehicle, just like the Mars lander. (There is no metal and silicon-based machine ever made that didn't get its start in the mind of a human.) It receives a variety of signals, processes them and generates responses. Tapping a meridian point delivers mechanical energy to a key. The energy is converted to an electrical signal that is propagated through the cells of the connective tissue (fascia, tendons, ligaments) by way of resonance (Popp et al.) and electron transport in the cell membranes (Lipton) and the microtubules (Penrose and Pribram) within each cell. This signal acts as a carrier wave. The tuning is essential (Callahan) in that it is the modulated information that is nested in the carrier (Bearden). The modulated signal collapses the superposition of quantum states that are causing the interference (McCarthy and Goswami). Thus the rapid change in system output (behavior, expression, affect, etc.). It is no different than adjusting the color, contrast, focus and brightness on the TV in order to get a clear picture. • EFT for painful menopause symptoms

Hi Everyone, Note how Karen Lewis from the UK uses EFT for breast tenderness. Along the way she says, " One of the advantages of knowing about EFT is the fact that here we have a tool, constantly at our fingertips, which we can use any time, any place, anywhere. Whenever I get a sign that the hormones are playing up, whether it be physical, mental or emotional, I take a few moments out to tap on whatever comes up and all is well again. I find it fascinating that EFT works so well on so many disparate issues and problems." Hugs, Gary By Karen Lewis Hi there, Gary. I'd like to share with you how the use of EFT helped not only to banish a problem of extremely tender, painful and swollen breasts for me, but also simultaneously appears to have helped my husband get his head out of the sand on a health issue of his own. I'm well on the menopausal journey now and, as a result, I'm finding occasional signs of hormonal imbalance taking place in my body. Normally I have very few problems but recently I suffered from a very painful problem affecting my breast area. Many women have experienced the problems of soreness, tenderness and swelling that can affect the breasts in the days prior to their periods. For some women, this can continue during the menopausal process, but rather than being a relatively minor discomfort it can become a major distraction. It certainly was for me at this time! As a result of my research into the psycho-emotional aspects of the symptoms of menopause it became obvious that the subject of breasts is often highly emotive. Physically, the breasts are a source of milk, nourishment for a growing baby. They are representative of caring, nurturing, comfort and security. The breasts are located in the area of the Heart chakra and its association with love, both physical and spiritual. Women are good at nurturing others, but can lack the same ability for themselves. They can also find themselves in relationships that lack nurturing love, wherein they may feel rejected, under-valued or unloved. Breast issues can be a reflection of this lack in a woman's life. For some women, it is difficult to draw the line in the nurturing stakes. So many of us women tend to take onto ourselves responsibility for others, and in the process often (s)mother them. This can include our children, but also our partners and other people as well. Breast discomfort may be trying to draw our attention to this state of affairs. This seemed to be the case for me when recently I had an episode of extreme breast tenderness in the two weeks before my period, especially affecting my right side. It was so bad that sleeping on my side was painful and uncomfortable. I've not been like that in a very long while. Eventually I decided enough was enough and I set about tapping away on it. It definitely graded the level of intensity at 10+ on a scale of 0 to 10 when I started using the Basic EFT Recipe. Even though my breasts, especially my right one, are so very painful… As I tapped away, I found myself remembering a spiritual healer I occasionally go to telling me that the right side of the body is concerned with the masculine side of things, or the males in your life, whereas the left is associated with the feminine and female influences. I had been worrying a lot about my husband recently. For over a year he had been putting off paying a long overdue visit to the diabetes nurse. An aspect arising? I began tapping: Even though I am worrying about my husband's health… Even though I wish he would look after himself better, I accept that I can only be responsible for my own state of being and that he must be responsible for his. Even though I worry about my husband because I care so much, I choose to let him make his own choices. I was now beginning to yawn, a personal sign that energy was shifting. I felt lighter somehow, and the tenderness, though still there, was very much reduced - probably 2 out of 10 or even 1 out of 10. I left it at that and settled down to sleep. The next morning I realized that there was hardly any breast tenderness left, and nothing at all by the end of the day. A good result and it produced some interesting insights. I thought little more of it, as it was more or less what I expected. One of the advantages of knowing about EFT is the fact that here we have a tool, constantly at our fingertips, which we can use any time, any place, anywhere. Whenever I get a sign that the hormones are playing up, whether it be physical, mental or emotional, I take a few moments out to tap on whatever comes up and all is well again. I find it fascinating that EFT works so well on so many disparate issues and problems. And how did this EFT episode help my husband? My belief is that we are all of us interconnected in an energetic web. As the saying by the Native American Chief Seattle goes: "Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect." It never occurred to me to mention the insights that I had received as I tapped. However, what I found VERY interesting to note was that about two days later my husband announced to me, out of the blue, that he had finally gotten around to making his appointment for blood-taking and follow-up with the nurse. Could it be that I had unblocked more than one energy 'zzzt'? It would not surprise me. Regards, Karen Lewis Reminder : For upgraded methods, please see our free and near-free TRAINING options. • For the skeptics--Is EFT a placebo?

Alert : This is one of 3,000 EFT Tapping articles that were written by users like you but before 2010. As such they are outdated and some of the links don't work. Nonetheless, they provide an excellent Peek at the Possibilities and show you the wide reach of even our older methods. See TRAINING for our free and near-free advanced methods. Hi Everyone, Gary Williams, the founder of EFT World Magazine, gives EFT skeptics something to think about as he explores this "placebo idea" with an actual case. Hugs, Gary By Gary Williams Hi Gary, One of the hardest aspects that I have to deal with when working as a trainer of EFT, or introducing the process to newcomers, is having to explain what is a very strange and unusual process.  It is not surprising to me that there are so many people who are skeptical, and I have found it interesting that even skeptical people get results if they venture to try out the process. Gary Craig has featured many interesting articles about how to deal with the skeptic and it is well worth spending time to study these articles as they can help you to build bridges with people who are resistant to the process.   Traveling around the internet you will find a lot of talk about EFT just being a placebo, like a doctor’s sugar pill.  In medical terms, a placebo is an inert substance that is administered to a person, and the person’s own beliefs that the substance will be effective and will allow or cause changes in their body to occur.  It is said that generally an average of 30 - 35 % of individuals who have been administered a placebo show improvement in the condition they are being treated for. Here is what Gary Craig has to say personally about EFT and the placebo effect.  “Placebo effects require some belief in the process and this is rarely the case for newcomers to EFT.  Also, although EFT may appear to be distracting, it will not work if the client is, in fact, distracted.  That is why the client continually repeats a reminder phrase which "tunes in" to the problem”. Recently I had an unexpected situation that allowed me to test the use of EFT in a dramatic situation which was also an event that brought into mind the placebo effect.  Like me you may have come across many unpleasant scenes in your life, scenes that leave you upset and feeling maybe a little queasy or uncomfortable in some way. Such a scene confronted me recently on a trip to my city centre.  I was traveling in a crowded bus, with the usual daredevil driving from the bus driver and the buzzing of many conversations in progress.  That was until we turned a blind corner and discovered a scene of devastation, two cars spilling out fuel and oil with smoke rising from one car which was half way up a tree, and the other car damaged to such an extent that the front of it was totally unrecognizable. Thankfully, with the modern seat belts and airbags, only minor injuries had occurred.  What was interesting from my point of view was that normally I would shy away from such a situation, my stomach would churn and I would leave someone else to deal with this, indeed the bus driver was about to reverse his now very silent bus and customers away from the scene, even though there were no services in attendance. What I find interesting now is that I simply asked the driver to let me off and found myself approaching the scene of devastation and asking people if they were OK.  One young girl was absolutely hysterical, screaming and not making much sense at all.   I approached her, looking her in the eye and said, “What I am about to do is a little strange,” and then began tapping her on the face and hands whilst still holding her gaze.  Within a matter of seconds, to my own surprise, she stopped shaking and became totally calm.  It was as though we had built an island of calm amongst the chaos. I can remember her saying “I am going to be late to pick up my father” - a strange thing to say, but I just reminded her that she had had an accident and that picking up her father would have to wait.  Meanwhile the services had been called and then when they arrived she calmly climbed into an ambulance to be assessed. It wasn’t until I actually began to do my shopping that I thought about what had just occurred.  What was interesting was that this lady had no idea about what I was about to do, we had no rapport as I was a total stranger, and also she had no idea about what EFT was or how it worked.  So it is interesting how it still helped her to find a level of calmness that just talking to her would not have achieved, especially so quickly.  I know I have tried to calm people in the past by just talking and believe me it takes a lot longer.  So is EFT a placebo? • When conflicting beliefs keep us stuck

It is common for us to have conflicting beliefs about what is good/bad, or what is true/false or what is right/wrong. These beliefs tend to keep us stuck because they compete with each other. Manuela Csikor from Germany describes this dilemma and then I make some augmenting comments that you may find helpful. By Manuela Csikor Dear Gary, First of all, thank you for this wonderful method!! Since five months I'm working with EFT for myself and with others and sometimes I still can't believe that it is SO easy and delightful to see problems, pains, negative emotions burst like soap bubbles. EFT helps a lot to see things clearer and to understand myself/others better as soon as this soap-bubbles-fog disappears. Now I would like to share a personal experience which might be helpful for others on their way to best performance - which I would NEVER have done before EFT ;-) While tapping for my perfectly built "Aufschieberitis" (the disease of putting off tasks for a later time) I stumbled over two contradicting phrases, two highlighted "writings on my wall": "I must be the best one/be successful (at school/job/etc.) to be loved and accepted." AND: "I must NOT be the best one/be successful (at school/job/etc.) to be loved and accepted." Both writings have been verified throughout my life and while fighting against each other they prevented me from doing first steps. Now they melt away and do not longer keep me from doing things I do the way I feel it is the best to do them. GC COMMENT: While Manuela doesn't say specifically how EFT was applied here, I might suggest...."Even though I have this conflict about what I must do to be loved and accepted...." and then I would suggest breaking down both sides of the conflict into the SPECIFIC EVENTS that caused these beliefs. • Helene - Breast Cancer

Video overview: Helene came to me with stage 4 breast cancer and attended a cancer only workshop in my home for 9 days.  Unlike many clients, she was willing to work on the one issue that others tend to avoid or save until last.  And that is guilt.  Clients will readily work on traumas, angers, fears and the like because they tend to involve something that the outside world does to us. But guilt??  That is often a little too close to home. We all carry around guilt for one thing or another and, fortunately, it can usually be reduced to Specific Events and handled efficiently.  As you will see, that is the case with Helene.  Note that her "shards of glass" pain dissipated in short order.  A follow-up several months later is included. © Gary Craig All Rights Reserved

  • The client who is "Never Good Enough" and The Brick Wall Technique

Alert : This is one of 3,000 EFT Tapping articles that were written by users like you but before 2010. As such they are outdated and some of the links don't work. Nonetheless, they provide an excellent Peek at the Possibilities and show you the wide reach of even our older methods. See TRAINING for our free and near-free advanced methods. Hi Everyone, In this well written article, Rehana Webster from New Zealand takes us step by step through her process of finding a core issue with a client--very helpful. Then she gives us the details of her very insightful Brick Wall Technique. This allows clients to see the big picture and gives an overall concept to the whole process. Serious EFT students will likely find this idea helpful. Hugs, Gary By Rehana Webster In early January I received a call from Jackie (not her real name) wanting an appointment as soon as possible. She had to be taken to the hospital on New Year's day suffering from acute chest pains. She said it was an angina attack because of the stress she was under from entertaining her family at their traditional New Year's gathering. At the beginning of the session I asked Jackie to tell me what had lead up to the angina attack (information gathering). She recounted that the whole family was at her place and she felt under immense stress having to produce a big festive meal. The stress built up as she felt she couldn't cope and resulted in chest pains. The ambulance whisked her away to hospital. The doctor who examined her said there was nothing the matter with her heart and there was no physical reason for her chest pain. I asked Jackie if there were other times in her life she had felt under stress (getting the client to do a chronological search of events that are related - at this point I introduced the BRICK WALL exercise - see below). Yes, she said that she had felt unduly stressed ALL HER LIFE (generalized state). I asked her if here was any emotional reason for her feeling that way (identify the feelings). "No," she replied, "I always felt stressed and it is a feeling of NOT GOOD ENOUGH (NGE) . So I asked if there were any special circumstances she felt stressed under (looking for triggers, imprints and SPECIFIC EVENTS). "No," she replied, "I always feel NGE and this is the prevailing feeling in my relationships, first marriage, second marriage, and third marriage! AND with my parents!" (getting closer to the core - going back into childhood events). "What about her parents," I asked (steering in the direction of an early trauma). That's when she vehemently spat it out and surprised both of us. "I've never felt good enough since I was four years old and I'll never forgive my parents for that!" (we had the SPECIFIC EVENT). "Do you want to tell me about it Jackie (doing the movie technique), as it seems quite significant? What would you rate it at out of 10?" (get the client to rate the intensity of feelings about the event) "10!" she replied. Jackie said that when she was 4, she fell out of her Grandmother's apple tree and broke her arm. The hospital was a 2-hour drive away and since her parents didn't have a car, the neighbors drove them all to the hospital. At the hospital Jackie's parents told her that they would return in a few hours and take her home with them. Her parents never showed up that day and to add insult to injury, sent another friend to pick her up from the hospital the following day. She had cried when the nurses told her that her parents were not coming to get her that day. Jackie was very upset and angry with her parents for ' lying ' to her. She never forgave them for it and since then always felt that she was NEVER GOOD ENOUGH . She was NEVER GOOD ENOUGH because she compared herself to her sister who had a life threatening disease and was hospitalized frequently. Her parents would ALWAYS stay at the hospital with her sister and never leave her there on her own. From Jackie's 4-year-old perspective she was obviously not good enough if her parents could abandon her at the hospital with her broken arm. Jackie was so surprised at the intensity of her feelings as she remembered this event so vividly. However, after EFT was applied to that incident, she was amazed at how she now saw the incident with a new perspective and non-judgmental attitude towards her parents, sister and self. The session ended with a round of tapping: "Even though my feelings were bruised and broken I forgive my parents for not being able to keep their promise and leaving me at the hospital but they were doing the best they could under the circumstances and I didn't die because of my broken arm!" Brick Wall Technique Do you have clients who cannot find specific events to work on? They come in with a generalized feeling and can't seem to find any connection with actual events. No matter how hard they try, their specific experiences are not available to them or they cannot make the connection between how they feel and early traumatic events. I use this very simple technique which provides a structure for the client to get involved in and follow through. I call it the Brick Wall. Let's imagine that a client complains of a general state of feeling ' Not-Good-Enough' (NGE) . I ask them to imagine their presenting state as if it was a big brick wall. They are invited to view this wall and notice what feelings arise from it. Next I draw a simple illustration of a brick wall. There are a number of rows and each row has a number of bricks (like a spreadsheet). I ask them to imagine that some bricks are representations of negative events in their lives that has contributed to their generalized negative state of NGE. The bottom row in the wall is year one of life and the second row is year two and so on. I ask them to label the bricks. The bricks at the bottom of the wall are obviously from earlier in life. Not all the bricks need to be labeled. I also ask the client to notice how some bricks from the lower rows are related to others in higher rows. It may be a chain of events going up the brick wall, starting from core events or early imprints from conditioning and upbringing. What does the client need to knock down this NGE wall? The wall can be high, solid and unmovable. I explain the logic of removing a couple of bricks from the bottom rows thereby weakening the wall considerably. Each brick the client treats with EFT weakens the structure of the mental schema and uncouples learned responses. The client gets to reprogram the brain by changing the biochemistry associated with the learned pattern of NGE. I ask the client to imagine the bricks as events, the wall as the generalized state and EFT as the pneumatic drill, which is going to knock out the bricks, thereby weakening the wall and collapsing it. This is usually done quite effortlessly! Rehana Webster Reminder : For upgraded methods, please see our free and near-free TRAINING options. • Persistent EFT helps with unnecessary worry and a feeling of always being responsible -- many side issues collapse as well

Hi Everyone, Jo Hainsworth from New Zealand took some cues from one of Silvia Hartmann's articles on our website and addressed some of her long held "writing on her walls" (beliefs). Along the way many new issues appeared. This is a quality example of how persistent EFT can clear many "side issues" during the process. Hugs, Gary By Jo Hainsworth I have been experimenting with some ideas that Silvia Hartmann wrote about in an article in the EFT Newsletter and have found this to be very effective.  Silvia talks about the idea of proxy tapping for our past selves, and healing across the different time periods of our early life. A really powerful use for this is working with really key writing on our walls (key messages we took on board that dictate how we behave now).  I recently had something happen that caused me to worry intensely about something, and when I felt the worry as tightness in my chest I realised that I really needed to sit down and do something about it.  I've been trying to break my worry pattern for years and while it has improved a lot, the tightness was letting me know I had some way to go! I started by pulling out a copy of Silvia's article, and thinking about events that could have resulted in writing on my walls to do with worry in the different time periods she suggests (pre-birth, birth, first 6 months, 6 months to 2 years, 2 to 6 years), and came up with the following list (note that the items on the list are of course based on my own perception as I grew up, and may bear little resemblance to reality in some cases.  When we are working with healing, it's our perceptions that matter, not what was in actual fact the case): My mother was worried that some medication she took while pregnant with me would affect me. My mother was quite isolated during the pregnancy and my early years, and had a lot of worries. As a first time Mum, my mother was probably worried about the birth. I was born two weeks late and there may have been a link with that and being worried about the birth. I was born very stressed and malnourished with the umbilical cord wrapped three times around my neck. I was taught by my mother's actions that the natural first response to anything upsetting was to worry. I also made a list of conclusions I had drawn about worry as a result of my upbringing and came up with: I considered my parents to be very responsible people My parents first response to any uncertainty was to worry Therefore "Responsible people worry, that's what they do" I then used another method I sometimes use to flush out additional writing on the walls - thinking about how a person without your writing on the walls handles a similar situation.  This led to me thinking about how my partner was handling the same situation, and flushed out the writing on the walls that: It's irresponsible not to worry!  (While intellectually I was appalled at my conclusion, emotionally I was convinced that I was in the right and my partner was indeed being completely irresponsible trusting that it would all work out in the end!) I decided to combine the sort of tapping and phrases that Silvia suggested in her article, with doing the 9 gamut process very slowly for each trauma, something else I have been experimenting with and finding very powerful.  Sometimes I type up the starting statements that I am going to tap on, in order to allow myself to just "follow along" instead of having to think up the words as I'm tapping.  This is the process I mapped out: 1.  Start by tapping on the top of the head and talking to the baby and young child inside of me to let them know what I would be doing, and thanking the parts of me who have been keeping me worrying to ensure that I'm a responsible person.  (To start with acceptance and make sure all parts of me realised this was a team thing, rather than something I was trying to "get rid of.") 2.  Even though this baby was bathed in worry while in the womb, from when her Mum was worried about the effect on her of the medication she was taking for a short time, from all the things her Mum worried about while pregnant with her, I now deeply and profoundly love and accept and heal this baby. 3.  9 Gamut process for worry in the womb 4.  Tapping through all points with the phrase I now deeply and completely HEAL this baby of all effects of worry sustained while in the womb 5.  Even though this baby was affected by all her Mum's worries leading up to, during and after the birth, and was so worried about being born that she was two weeks late, I now deeply and profoundly love and accept and heal this baby.   (Rambling through the tapping points including statements like "born into worry and stress")  6.  9 Gamut process for worry about being born and associating life with worry because I was born into worry and stress 7.  Tapping through all the points with the phrase … I now deeply and completely HEAL this baby of all the effects of worry sustained leading up to, during and after her birth. 8.  Even though this child was taught to worry and not to trust, I now deeply and profoundly love and encourage this child to trust (+ rambling through points) 9.  9 Gamut process for being taught to worry as first response 10.  Tapping through all the points with … I now deeply and completely HEAL this baby of all effects of being taught to worry as the first response to anything upsetting and let her know that it's safe to trust. 11.  Even though this child was taught that it is responsible to worry, I now deeply and profoundly love and encourage this child to know that trusting in the responsible choice. (+ Rambling through points) 12.  Tapping through all the points with I now deeply and completely HEAL this baby and this little girl of all the effects of being taught to worry as the first response to anything upsetting and let her know that the responsible choice is to trust. 13.  Even though as a baby and a child I was taught that responsible people worry, I now choose to know that the responsible choice is to trust. (Tapped this with three rounds: 1 - Taught that responsible people worry, 2 - The responsible choice is to trust, 3 - Alternating the two 14.  9 Gamut process for all remaining effects of being taught to worry As I tapped the following additional things came to mind which I addressed as they came up: My mother was my protector and her response to anything upsetting was to worry, so I associated worry with protection.  There was writing on my wall that said that the best way to protect myself from something was to worry. There was a part of me that felt it was not safe to stop worrying - I had pain all up the back of my neck that I needed to tap on before I could continue. I was born into worry and had a belief that you are only really alive if you are worrying about something. I realised that the writing on the walls was more specific than I had first thought, and it was that the natural response to uncertainty was to worry I was unable to tap on the part that it's safe to trust and had to take a detour and deal with early events that had resulted in me taking on the belief that trusting someone results in you getting hurt.  There were two key events that came up with this. By the time I had finished half of this tapping I had burped and yawned so much, and accessed so many previously unknown feelings that I had to stop for the day.  By this time I had completely stopped worrying about the previously "major" situation, and had realised that my partner's approach was the responsible one.  The following day I finished off the tapping to be sure. While I won't know whether or not this has really made a dent in my lifelong tendency to worry for a while, I know that I cleared a heck of a lot of writing from my walls that I didn't even know I had and I have had an number of occasions since where I would normally have worried, which haven't resulted in any worrying at all.  I was also totally at peace with the situation that had caused so much worry that my chest had been tight, and surprise, surprise - it resolved itself the following day and it turned out my partner's approach was the only sensible option!  I have found a remarkable absence of the voice in my head that used to comment on all the things that could go wrong in any new situation, and it seems to have been replaced by a trusting voice that is proving to be much better company! I seriously encourage anyone who is dealing with core writing on the walls to consider using the tapping in this way that Silvia suggests, and incorporating a slow and mindful version of the 9 gamut process each step of the way if it feels supportive to you.  This sort of tapping on early messages is so incredibly powerful, it's really getting to the root of so many of our current issues. • Tips for conducting intensive EFT sessions -- a several day case regarding Bulimia

Hi Everyone, Deborah Miller PhD from Mexico gives us many vital thoughts for EFT sessions that last many hours or days. She illustrates this with an extended session for her Bulimic client. Health professionals and serious EFT students will find some priceless gems in Deborah's article. Hugs, Gary By Deborah Miller PhD Gary On average most practitioners provide EFT sessions that last about an hour.  I had an opportunity to work with Angelica (not her real name) in what I’ll call an EFT Intensive.  We spent 3 days and then later 6 days working together.  It was powerful and useful to work through the many layers of the issue she had.  I believe it will be useful for others to know about this option. Namaste, Deborah Intensive Individual Session Let me describe what I am calling an EFT Intensive Session.  First of all, the session involves one person being attended by an EFT practitioner for many hours or days at a time.  The client gets individualized attention, tapping on the many layers of a long-term or in-depth issue instead of waiting between sessions to start up again.  The intensive has momentum and keeps working on an issue until deeper layers are discovered and released. In this way an EFT intensive session is powerful. Let me give you the reasons why we chose to do an Intensive EFT session, the benefits and requirements involved, followed by an example of how I organized the session. Reasons for Doing the Intensive EFT Sessions: She lives in a city hours away. The issue at hand was a 20 year problem with bulimia.  Angelica has tried many alternative modalities to overcome it such as yoga, meditation, acupuncture, energy, intuitive massage.  She also has had plenty of mainstream therapy, too - including hospitalization and a residential eating disorders program. Nothing has given her lasting relief.  She feared she would never overcome this problem. It wasn’t likely that one hour EFT sessions would get to all of the layers involved in this complex problem in a timely fashion. Benefits: Allowed us to focus and stay focused on the topic, dig deeper, find links between many topics, people, situations and events while continuing to release, release and release. Led to great shifts and a deep unblocking of the body’s energy system. Connection between client and practitioner deepened allowing further insights. It is incredibly powerful.          Requirements: Be prepared mentally, emotionally and physically to “stay connected with” the client for long periods of time. Be focused, tuned into and attentive to your client’s needs as well as your own. Watch for signs telling you one or both of you need a break. Know when to stop and/or include a different technique.  Example - Three Day Intensive with Angelica: We did EFT together for about 6-7 hours a day. We went for 4 hours straight with only water and restroom breaks. We drank plenty of water to keep us hydrated. We took 2 hour breaks for lunch. We returned for another 2-3 hour session. What I described was perfect for the first day.  The second day we began the same, 4 hours in the morning, a 2 hour break, but in the afternoon Angelica couldn’t shift any more energy and didn’t desire to tap or speak.  At that point we stopped tapping and I gave her Reiki.  It allowed her to continue releasing while receiving Reiki which helped adjust and align her energy field.  Angelica is very sensitive and could feel the energy moving and flowing through her body in ways she hadn’t felt in years. After 2 days, we took a break for one day.  In this case it was necessary both of us.  The final day we did 4 hours of EFT in the morning, took a longer break of 3 hours and ended with another Reiki session.  At that point we felt complete.  Not because we believed we had gotten rid of all her issues or the bulimia, but it was the amount that she could shift at that time.  We chose to have further phone consults within a week.  She was free to contact me at any time if help was needed. After a few months of phone EFT consults my client realized she wasn’t yet capable of doing EFT on her own.  We set up the second EFT intensive of 6 days.  We followed the same overall procedure, and found our rhythm quickly and sustained it for longer periods of time.  This time we included outings to places that normally caused Angelica to feel stressed and agitated.  We found that tapping in these places was of great benefit. The overall results of the EFT intensive can best be described in Angelica’s words, “After the EFT intensive I felt hope for the first time in years that I could overcome bulimia.  I know I have more to release but now realize that my problem is not bulimia but blocked energy.  Bulimia is just a symptom.” What results came from the Three Day Intensive: Greater happiness Hope for the first time in years that she could overcome bulimia. No binging or purging for 8 straight days with little anxiety.  This was the first and longest period without doing so in years. Released tension in her body: shoulders, back, coccyx Vision cleared Less stress and anxiety Cleaned computer area where she tended to binge Released many childhood, teen and adult traumatic experiences Released brain fog Serenity and peace of mind and body I would highly recommend an EFT intensive. I would also caution that in order to properly facilitate an EFT Intensive the practitioner and client need to be prepared. • Stepping back from the movie in the EFT Movie Technique

Hi Everyone, Stewart Robertson from the UK offers this innovation to our popular EFT Movie Technique. He uses some advanced therapy concepts in this article and thus it will likely have its largest appeal to seasoned professionals. Hugs, Gary By Stewart Robertson This simple method is especially helpful when people are too intense to even consider using the Movie Technique.  It is also useful to take the edge off any fight or flight state, or their resistance to even "go there". First, visually dissociate the client from the traumatic scene in the usual way.  Instruct the client to see him or her self, over there, in the picture.  Make sure they are far enough away from the scene to feel completely at ease.  At this stage they could be in the next room, down the street, or even the next town over. Next ask the client in their imagination to take one or two paces closer to that version of them in the scene, and ask what comes up for them, or, more specifically, "What aspect about stepping into that younger you feels most intense now?" Your client could feel intensity about emotions about the thought of reliving the trauma … emotions about the trauma itself, or … a physical discomfort.  Look for any or all of these, although personally I like to eliminate all aspects of the thought of reliving the trauma first. At any rate, stomp out all aspects of whatever comes up with EFT.  Shift aspects if necessary, then return back to the original aspects later and check them again, for a thorough job.  Once again, instruct the client to take another pace or two closer to that version of themselves, there in the picture, and tap out whatever comes up.  Repeat this process until client is comfortable stepping into his or her own body all the way. Then, go through the Movie Technique in the normal way, applying EFT to ALL aspects of the actual movie.  Many times you will find that the levels of intensity on the movie content itself are substantially reduced already, before you even begin tapping on it.  In the usual way, make sure you point this out to your client. If your client does inadvertently go into fight/flight, use heartmath breathing or continuous tapping all over, or using your fingers, direct clients' gaze upwards for a few moments, moving your fingers from left to right and back again (useful NLP quickie to take client out of feelings mode and into visual mode, away from overwhelm) With love and blessings from sunny Glasgow, Stewart Reminder : For upgraded methods, please see our free and near-free TRAINING options. • Improve your success rate by asking the right questions

Hi Everyone, Dr. Carol Look helps us sharpen our delivery by giving us several important questions to ask ...AND... an in-depth discussion about each of them. This is a 2 part series and there are 5 questions in each part. Hugs, Gary Part 1: Questions 1-5 Part 2: Questions 6-10 By Dr. Carol Look LCSW DCH Part 1: Questions 1-5 Asking the right questions at the right time is essential to zeroing in on the exact issue your client needs to work on during sessions. Listening deeply to the answers to these questions separates good EFT practitioners from excellent, masterful ones. Many beginning EFT practitioners ask me in supervision sessions, "So how do you know what to tap on?" Good question! When I started asking more of the "right" questions, my EFT practice improved considerably. Practitioners need to establish rapport and ask questions that will get to the heart of the matter. This work is never one-size-fits-all. If you don't know what the "real" problem is, or the strongest emotional driver that's feeding your client's conflict, you won't be able to aim the EFT treatment in the right direction. If you aim the EFT treatment at the real issue, you dramatically improve your success rate and take less time getting results. My favorite brilliant question of course is Gary Craig's "If you could live your life over again, and there were something or someone in your life you would just as soon skip, what or who would it be?" This gives the clinician immediate access to troublesome memories, relationships, and time periods in the client's life that the client might not have associated with their emotional conflicts or physical ailments. The following list of special questions helps me decide where to direct my tapping and how to become more specific with the EFT treatment. While some of you will recognize these questions from my work with weight loss and other addictive processes, they can be used effectively whether you are working with anxiety, addictions, physical ailments or blocks to abundance. While these questions don't need to be asked all in one session, I am confident the answers to them will always improve my accuracy and success rate with EFT . Some of them are as follows: 1. How long have you suffered from this problem (conflict, ailment, disorder, concern...)? This question helps the therapist to orient themselves so they know whether this is a life long problem or it just surfaced since a recent stressor in the client's life. While it may seem obvious that you need to know this information, too many clinicians forget to gather this information. If your client has been overweight since childhood, the course of treatment is very different than if they started putting on weight during menopause. Suggestions for tapping for focusing on when the ailment started might be: "Even though I started feeling this pain in high school, I deeply and completely accept who I am...Even though I didn't feel these symptoms until my son left for college, I choose to accept how my body is responding...Even though I didn't start overeating until I felt grief about my grandmother's death, I accept all of me and appreciate how I have been handling my life." 2. What was happening in your life before or during the time of diagnosis, or when you noticed this problem arise? This is just another way of asking question #1. We all know that stress triggers emotional and physiological problems. Our immune systems become weakened under stressful situations, and often we do not "connect the dots" between a family crisis or stressful employment situation and an emerging cluster of physical symptoms. Try variations of these statements: "Even though I didn't have my first panic attack until after that terrible family fight, I accept myself and love who I am anyway...Even though I didn't feel this pain until after I moved to the new home, I love and accept myself and my feelings...Even though I started overeating because of my loneliness after the relationship broke up, I choose to feel calm anyway." 3. Who else in your family history has suffered from this? We often identify ourselves with particular family members. Sometimes we are even told "You are just like Aunt Sara..." or "You look just like your mother..." (who, by the way, might have died of heart disease or cancer or something else...) These associations get caught in our clever minds, and we tend to live out certain suggestions. "Even though I have taken on her ailments to be close to her, I accept who I am and how I feel...Even though I am identifying with my father by having knee problems, I deeply and completely accept myself...Even though I was trying to be like _____ by getting the same ailments, I choose to release this pattern now." 4. What would you be focusing on if you didn't spend time worrying about this issue? One of my clients told me that if she stopped obsessing about food, she "might" have to take a look at her failing marriage, and she wasn't prepared to do that just yet. This is the information a clinician wants. This client's need to lose weight wasn't as strong as her need to avoid looking at her marriage. The EFT practitioner needs to know this or will think EFT doesn't work when actually, the reasons around the problem weren't explored deeply enough. Try setup phrases along the lines of: "Even though I'm afraid to give up this obsession, I choose to relax and feel free about it...Even though I don't feel safe when I'm not beating up on myself, I accept and love myself anyway...Even though I don't feel safe feeling the depth of my loneliness, I choose to love and accept myself anyway." 5. How would you be spending your time if you weren't taking care of or managing this problem? Several of my clients admitted to using a mild "chronic" illness as a way to avoid entering into new relationships. Their fears of intimacy and wounds from being "dumped" before were so great, that they avoided socializing because of the pain, discomfort, and complications associated with the illness. Examples of tapping sequences that would lead the client to more relief and the freedom to consider different options are: "Even though I'm using my symptoms as a way to protect myself from being hurt again, I accept and love myself anyway...Even though I'm afraid to even try a new relationship because of what happened last time, I choose to feel safe without these symptoms...Even though I don't feel safe unless I'm hiding behind these problems, I accept and love all of me right now." Again, these may all be obvious questions, but a majority of the practitioners don't ask them, or when they do, don't listen deeply to the answers. Stay tuned for the next 5 questions! Hope this helps, Carol Look Part 2: Questions 6-10 Below is the second half of my favorite list of questions to improve my success rate. Again, while some of them seem super obvious, you would be surprised by how many practitioners don't ask them, or don't listen to the exact answer when they do! As I said in the first part of this series: "Asking the right questions at the right time is essential to zeroing in on the exact issue your client needs to work on during sessions. Listening deeply to the answers to these questions separates good EFT practitioners from excellent, masterful ones." Another of my favorite questions from Gary Craig when working with physical ailments is "If there were an emotional contributor to this pain, what would it be?" And if the client "doesn't know" Gary asks them to just guess anyway. The following special questions (the second half of my list) help me decide where to direct my tapping and how to become more specific with the EFT treatment. While some of you will recognize these questions from my work with weight loss and other addictive processes, they can be used effectively whether you are working with anxiety, addictions, physical ailments or blocks to abundance. I am confident the answers to them will always improve my accuracy and success rate with EFT . They are as follows: 6. How would you feel if you didn't have this in your life? One of my clients who was a heavy smoker for 30 years said, "I would have no idea who I was, or what my identity would be if I didn't have a cigarette in my hand." Identity issues are critical, and need to be explored so you can aim the treatment at the right problem. You could tap as follows: "Even though I'm afraid of the loss and grief if I give up smoking, I choose to feel calm and peaceful anyway...Even though I'll feel insecure and won't know who I am without this problem, I choose to feel free and relaxed right now...Even though I need this challenge to feel important..." 7. What is the downside of getting rid of this problem? This is my favorite question, because while it often takes clients by surprise, the client is usually very forthright about giving more than one "downside." My client with financial difficulties said he is successfully avoiding being criticized by his siblings by "staying in the struggle." He knows that as soon as he breaks through the abundance barriers (and he knows EFT is the tool to do so) his family members will jump all over him for being "rich" and will then "hit him up" for money! This is one of those fears of not being "safe" that is a perfect target for EFT. One direction of tapping setup phrases might proceed as follows: "Even though I won't feel safe if I am wealthy because of what he might say, I choose to accept myself anyway...Even though they won't feel safe or happy if I succeed, I choose to move forward anyway...Even though I'm afraid to succeed because of their typical reactions, I deeply and completely love and accept ALL OF ME anyway." 8. What is the upside of holding onto this problem? How does holding onto this problem help you or give you something positive? Like it or not, all of our problems and conflicts "do something" for us. We need to take responsibility for any secondary gains we might be receiving as a result of our limitations. A lovely woman in a recent class was having violent dreams in the middle of the night and often ended up in the emergency room getting stitches from throwing herself out of bed and onto the floor in the middle of her nightmares. After tapping on the fears from the dreams, I asked her the "upside" of this issue. She said being "hurt" allowed her to take care of herself instead of running to take care of needy family members. Her injuries were "legitimate" reasons to stay home. We tapped on "Even though I feel trapped and don't know how to say "no" to others, I deeply and completely...Even though I feel as if I am boxed in by their demands, I choose to say no and feel safe anyway...Even though I haven't found the right way to take care of myself YET, I deeply and completely accept all of me right now." 9. What is YOUR theory about why you haven't yet resolved this dilemma, cleared this issue, neutralized this conflict? I know that all of my clients are brilliant and know the answers to these questions. A typical conversation following this above question runs something like this: Carol: "Tell me your theory about why you haven't resolved this problem yet." Client: "My doctor says..." Carol : "Yes, but I'm interested in what you think the reason is?" Client: "My husband told me..." Carol : "OK, that's his theory, but what do you think is the block to recovery in this case?" Client : "I read somewhere that people with this illness..." Carol : "I've heard that too, but tell me what your inner guidance/wisdom is telling you about this." (Long pause...) Client : "I am afraid to reach my potential because they will be jealous of me or hurt me..." Carol : "What happened the last time you felt like you had reached your potential?" Client : "My husband left me." Carol : "That would be a good reason to keep yourself stuck. Anything else?" Client : "Yes, I don't want to have to live up to anyone's expectations. I just want to be left alone." 10. What happened the last time you were at your best? Reached your goal? Got promoted? Won the award? Announced how happy you were in the new relationship? Looked fabulous? Said "no" to someone who was asking too much of you? I love these questions, because the client sees the connection immediately. When I asked a client who was struggling with abundance this question, she told me that she was afraid to succeed again because when she got a huge promotion, she went home and told her parents, and the following week her mother died of a stroke. "Even though I'm afraid something bad will happen again, like the last time, I deeply and completely love and accept myself anyway...Even though it doesn't feel safe being successful, I choose to accept my talents and my skills...Even though I'm afraid to embrace my power because of what happened the last time, I accept all that I am and appreciate what I offer the world." So remember, asking the right questions will not only save you and your client time, it will improve your accuracy and success rate. Asking the right questions is also a wonderful way to gain rapport with your client if you listen deeply and use the essence of what the client offers you. Continue asking the questions that will reveal the heart of your client's issues, and your success with EFT will rise dramatically.
